This is why there have been courses lengthened all over the world, greens are made faster and more undulated, as well as restrictions being placed on equipment from the driver to golf ball and even wedges as they began producing so much spin due to groove technology advancements. Simply put, rubber cement, white ink and blue pencil You would take the sheet your were putting your design elements on, and usually sketch things out lightly in blue pencil -- which wouldn't reproduce. You took your design elements, say the block of text or the photograph, and applied rubber cement to both it and to where on the page you were putting it you wanted it to adhere to. Then you let it dry. Rubber cement sticks together whether it is wet or not, and letting it dry will let it adhere while allowing you to reposition it if it appears wrong. When it is dry you put it together. Then you take either a commercial block of rubber cement or a dried blob which is just lying around and clean up any rubber cement that is not covered by the picture. That's right, rub over it and it will come right up. Usually, the area at the edge of the design element will photograph and photograph as black. That's where the thick white ink comes in. You paint over it and cover up the join. Then when it dries you send it to be photographed for reproduction. EDIT: This was the age of photomechanical reproduction, so if some element needed to be bigger or smaller you had it printed out bigger or smaller in the dark room.
